Professor Safari's students in Crystal Chemistry and Structure of Materials (Fall 2016) present the various zeolite structural models they built from the constituent atoms.  Zeolites are microporous, aluminosilicate crystals that occur naturally but can also be produced synthetically at high volumes.  Their structure open and can accommodate a wide variety of cations, such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ among others. These positive ions are rather loosely held and can readily be exchanged for others in aqueous solution.
