The much feared MSE Golems took on two perennial powers of the Rutgers Intramural Softball League at University Park last night in a twilight-night doubleheader. Looking powerful and assured the MSE team defeated the Food Science "Foodies" 14 - 12 in the twilight game before dropping the nightcap to the Environmental Science "Adiabats." The Golems have already qualified for the post-season and look forward to being a dominant force in the playoffs.

Dr. Lisa Klein was honored by Rutgers University, receiving the Human Dignity Award for her work in encouraging minorities, women, and otherwise disadvantaged groups to pursue their goals. She has dedicated her life to creating a more inclusive environment for these underrepresented groups. The Human Dignity Award recognizes her extraordinary efforts to increase diversity both in academia and in the workforce.

MSE undergraduates Lazaro Pacheco and Jamie Wooding presented a poster paper at the Aresty Symposium on May 6th entitled “Characterization of Graphene-Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites” (Advisor: Dr. Jennifer Lynch). After careful judging of the many excellent presentations, Laz and Jamie's poster was selected as “Best Poster” in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The poster earned particularly high marks and the judges noted additionally that the work demonstrated great creativity and the presentation was made with excellent clarity and detail.

Congratulations to Edmund Han on receiving the 2015 US Department of Energy - Integrated University Scholarship for his research in the field of nuclear waste management. Edmund Han is an undergraduate student (sophomore) at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Rutgers University. He is working under the mentorship of Prof. Ashutosh Goel and his research is focused towards understanding crystallization kinetics and chemical durability of high level nuclear waste glasses.

Congratulations to Edmund Han on receiving the 2015 Roy G. Post Foundation Scholarship. Edmund Han is an undergraduate student at Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, researching under the advisory of Professor Ashutosh Goel in the field of glass engineering. He is a sophomore in Material Science and Engineering, Class of 2017. He is currently studying the impact of iron content on sodium- and alumina-rich silicate glasses.

The Malcolm G. McLaren Distinguished Lecture Symposium with the theme of "The Possibilities of Glass" will be held on Friday April 17th on the Rutgers Campus. The afternoon technical program features Professor David Pye as the MGM Distinguished Lecturer. An additional Special Invited Lecture will feature the renowned glass artist Bertil Vallien. Come join us at the Zimmerli Museum of Art on the College Avenue Campus for the afternoon lectures and stay for the reception and banquet held in the museum’s beautiful galleries.

Honor students from the Class of 2018 visited the department and were shown some of exciting research and educational activities occurring in the department. Chair Richard Lehman welcomed them with an overview of the department and noted that they should feel very welcome in the department considering that 28% of our sophomores are honors students, three times the school average. Also noted were the laboratory research opportunities available to them and the excellent careers their studies will lead them to.
