A group of 17 students and four faculty and staff from the Materials Science and Engineering Department traveled to visit Corning Incorporated in Corning, NY from March 14 - 16.  During the three day, 24/7 experience we saw an amazing array of science and engineering laboratories and plants that illustrate how Gorilla glass and display glass are made for our phones and tablets, as well as ceramic catalytic supports and filters for automotive and diesel applications that help keep the air clean in our major cities, plus an array of other emerging technologies.  It was all quite an experience

The Materials Research Society (MRS) is a principal technical organization for materials scientist and engineers.  The MRS 2017 Fall Meeting was held in Boston, MA during November 26 to December 1.  The meeting featured the presentation of many technical papers, both oral and poster, as well as numerous networking forums and a large commercial exposition.  The Rutgers Material Advantage section organized a sizable expedition to Boston to attend where the students learned much and had a great time.  But soon it was time to go home to begin preparing for the upcoming final exam period.

On Friday October 27th, 2017, freshman from the Engineering Honors Academy met with SoE undergraduate directors at the School of Engineering’s "Table Talk with Deans and Faculty". This is a unique forum where faculty and scholars of the incoming first year Honors Academy class of 2021 have a chance to meet each other in a small group setting.  This event give the scholars a chance to learn more about each department and faculty members a chance to connect with their students.

Dr. Peter Schultz, co-inventor of the low-loss optical fiber that enables our worldwide communications network, recently visited MSE and presented an excellent talk entitled, "In Pursuit of Perfect Glass: Fifty Years and Still At It."  Included were many details of his professional journey from scientist to business executive, including his transformative invention (along with Don Keck and Bob Maurer) in 1971 that enabled the manufacture and use of low-loss optical fibers for high-bandwidth long-distance telecommunications.
