Rutgers Engineering Society Distinguished Engineer Award
Over the course of his professional career, Grant Lu has distinguished himself as both a research scientist and a business leader. Following early career positions in research and development as a scientist at the Naval Research Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Norton/Saint Gobain, Lu pursued his interest and aptitude in business, becoming a product manager at Norton/Saint Gobain before joining Heraeus Amersil as a business manager for specialty fiber.
In 2001, he was named president of Heraeus Quartz North America (HQNA), a manufacturer of silica glass for fiber optics telecommunications as well as other applications such as high-power laser optics. Fiber optics are a key enabling technology for voice, data, and video transmission to the home and via cell phone. HQNA is part of the Heraeus Group—a Global Fortune 500 company and one of the largest family owned companies in Germany—providing at least a portion of the glass in one-quarter of the world's total fiber optics production. Lu has also led Heraeus' support of the North Gwinnett Co-op ministries which provide food, clothing, and utility assistance to local residents. The company was named one of Atlanta's Top 100 Workplaces by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
