MSE hosted the Governor’s School of New Jersey Program in Engineering & Technology (GSET) July 11-15, 2022 for “Hands-on” experience in materials processing. Directed by Dr. Kim Scott, 24 students had the opportunity to work with glass, polymers, ferrofluids and conductors

July 13, 2022 Dr. Klein hosted 4-H STEM Ambassadors to explore clean energy from solar cells. The 4-H STEM Ambassador program welcomes New Jersey youth from middle and high school to the Busch Campus and School of Engineering to participate in hands-on activities as they learn alongside Rutgers faculty in their respective discipline. Now in its 14thyear, the program supports young people from six urban communities around New Jersey, with the objective of supporting and encouraging first generation college students in the pursuit of STEM careers.

Professor Ahmad Safari received the International Award of Ferroelectric Materials and Their Applications of 2022. The award was given at the 39th meeting on Ferroelectric Materials and Their Applications (FMA) in Kyoto Japan in recognition of Dr. Safari’s contribution to Ferroelectric and Piezoelectric Materials.

Alumnus John Ballato (on left) received the George W. Morey Award, from the Glass and Optical Materials Division (GOMD) of the American Ceramic Society. The award recognizes new and original work in the field of glass science and technology. Dr. Ballato is Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, Clemson University. Here he is receiving the award from GOMD Chair Gang Chen (Ohio University) at the Annual GOMD Division Meeting in Baltimore, MD, on May 24, 2022. His talk was titled “Optical fiber meets the periodic table: The past, present, and future of the molten core method”.

Congratulations to Prof. Akdoğan for receiving the Professor of the Year in Materials Science & Engineering for Academic Year 2021-22 from the Students’ Engineering Governing Council (EGC). The award presentation was made on 2 May 2021 in Richard Weeks Hall on Busch Campus. The students’ quote for Prof. Akdoğan reads: “Gives incredible engineering insight beyond the course material such as real life engineering case studies, industrial information such as patent methods, Rutgers' contributions to engineering, career paths and options for different engineers."

Malcolm G. McLaren (MGM) Distinguished Lecture Symposium was held on Thursday April 28th. Dr. Martin Harmer was honored as the Distinguished Lecturer and the featured highlight of the 2022 McLaren Lecture Symposium. More than 100 faculty, students, alumni, and friends attended. The MSE Senior Poster Competition was an excellent opportunity to review departmental research.

Dr. David Morse, executive vice president and chief technology officer, Science & Technology, announces the appointment of Dr. Matthew J. Dejneka as Corporate Fellow, effective March 28, 2022.

MSE Night 2022 took place on 22 March from 4-7 pm and attracted >80 first-year students. In the lobby, 3D printing, glass cloth thermal stability, Nitinol shape memory alloy, Gorilla Glass, and fluorescent glass demos were conducted. Also, 3D SLA (Prof. Haber), STEM (Prof. Batson), Corning Glass (Prof. Goel), Hologram (Prof. O'Carroll), Hybrid Micro/Nano Manufacturing (Prof. Singer MAE) lab tours were offered. The event was a great success.
