McLaren Distinguished Lecture in Materials Science and Engineering at Rutgers University Friday as part of a day-long symposium honoring the late leader and MSE department head.  Shown here answering questions afterwards, her lecture addressed "Innovations Fueling a New Era of Sustainability."

After receiving the R&D 100 award last night for structures made from Rutgers University licensed polymer blend technology as one of the best 100 technology developments worldwide (, the Army Corps of Engineers, Rutgers, and Axion International were then chosen to be one of the Top 3 Technologies of that group for 2011.

The All Thermoplastic Composite, I-Beam Design, High-Capacity Bridge System has been selected by an independent judging panel and editors of R&D Magazine as a recipient of a 2011 R&D 100 Award. This highly prestigious national award recognizes the 100 most technologically significant products introduced the past year.  Rutgers MSE polymer scientists and engineers, led by Professor Thomas Nosker and working in the MSE-based Advanced Polymer Center, developed the polymer composite blend used in the design.

Cekdar Vakifahmetoglu, a post-doctoral associate working with Professor Richard Riman, has been selected as the winner of the inaugural Davidge award for his review on the "Fabrication and properties of ceramic ID nanostructures from preceramic polymers".  His review is published in Vol. 110, Issue 4 of "Advances in Applied Ceramics."  The award is run by the Editorial Board of Advances in Applied Ceramics and is open to postgraduates worldwide.  In the words of the publisher, Dr.

The IEEE-UFFC (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society) has honored Prof. Ahmad Safari by selecting him as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for 2011.  The award will be presented to him in July at the ISAF symposium in Vancouver, Canada.   MSE's heartiest congratulations go out to Prof. Safari!

On May 1 of this year at the Engineering Governing Council's Leadership Conference held at Brower Commons, Prof. John Matthewson received a certificate for his having been awarded Teacher of the Year for our department. The Council acknowledged his dedication to his students, noting that it had not been overlooked.  Prof. Matthewson has been at Rutgers since 1991, and continues to inspire his students.  Our congratulations for a well-deserved award go out to him.

Congratulations to Carlos Bledt, MSE Class '12, who has been awarded a scholarship from SPIE, The International Society for Optics and Photonics. He will be presented with a certificate at one of the upcoming SPIE meetings. Carlos studies with Prof. James Harrington, who heads The Laboratory for the Development of Specialty Fiber Optics, a part of the Materials Science and Engineering Department.  The goal of this research laboratory is the development of specialty fiber optics for the transmission of infrared energy for a variety applications.
