MSE Professor Lisa Klein Named ACerS Distinguished Life Member 

The American Ceramic Society (ACerS), which serves more than 10,000 members from more than 70 countries, will present its Distinguished Life Member Award to Lisa Klein, distinguished professor and chair of the School of Engineering Materials Science and Engineering Department at their Annual Honor and Awards Banquet in October. 

Distinguished Life Membership in the ACerS -- the society’s highest honor -- recognizes Klein’s significant contributions to ceramic science as both a mentor to students and junior scientists as well as a leader in the society itself.  

Klein is a trailblazer and internationally recognized expert in her field. In 1977, she broke new ground as the first woman faculty member in the Department of Ceramic Science and Engineering. During her Rutgers Engineering tenure, she has also been a visiting professor at the University of Grenoble, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  

She describes her research focus as being on the “synthesis and processing of ceramics and glasses using the sol-gel process, with an emphasis on processing conditions for forming gels for optical applications, porous membranes, and electrochemical devices such as fuel cells, smart windows, and hermetic seals.”  

An ACerS member for more than 50 years, and an ACerS Fellow since 1988, Klein edited the Journal of the American Ceramic Society from 1998 to 2019.  

She is also a Fellow of the Society of Glass Technology and an elected member of the World Academy of Ceramics.
